The Rotary Club of Bombay, Mumbai’s first Rotary Club, was formed on 19th March 1929. This was the second Rotary Club in India after Rotary Club of Calcutta which was chartered on 1st January, 1920. Of the 38 charter members of the club in Bombay, 37 were non-Indians. The only Indian was Sir Phiroz Sethna, a legislative member, who later served as District Governor in 1937-38.
After Rotary Club of Bombay was chartered, Rotary movement grew in Gujarat, Maharashtra and nearby areas. It also grew in other Indian States as well as in neighbouring countries. Between 1929 and 1970, these clubs were structured in various zones & districts several times to accommodate the growth of Rotary movement worldwide.
RI District 314 came into existence on 1st July 1970 with a membership of 1702 in 34 clubs.
Previously, the clubs in District 3140 were in the district 890, 920, 540 and 315 according to the dates on which they were admitted to Rotary International. At its February 1982 meeting, the Board of Di rectors of Rotary Internat ional reorganized the Rotary Clubs in India according to the revenue districts. District 314 comprised the revenue districts of Akola, Amravati, Bhandara, Bombay, Buldhana, Chandrapur, Jalgaon, Nasik, Thane, Wardha and Yeotmal.
Effective 1st July 1990, RI District 314 was reorganised to comprise the revenue districts of only Bombay & Thane, including Kalyan, Dombivali and Badlapur. There were sixty-three Rotary Clubs in this District at that time. Initially named District 314, it was rechristened as District 3140 in the year 91- 92 with Rtn. N. S. Sippy Rao as the first Di s t r i c t Gov e rnor for the ne w l y nomenclature District. Rotary District 3140 was the largest district in the world with 148 Clubs and 7,500 members before it was bifurcated into 2 Districts from 3140 to 3141 & 3142 in year 2016-17. District was bifurcated in to two districts from 1st July, 2016… District 3141 (Mumbai Revenue district) and 3142 (Thane Revenue District). PDG Gopalaprai Mandhania was the first District governor in bifurcated district 3141. Rotary District 3141 Covers the area of Mumbai from Churchgate to Dahanu & CST to Mulund. As on 1st April, 2024, District 3141 has 115 clubs comprising of 6300+ active members. India comprises of four zones 4,5, 6 and 7. District 3141 represents Rotary International Zone 4.
